The Dating Game: The Tricks We Play to Get God to Send Us Our ...

Father, I just want you to know that this is it. I've officially given up the search for a man. From now on, I’m done with the whole thing, and I’ll just live for you. Come wha t may.

There, I’d said the magic words. I cracked my eyes open to see if a man had now dropped out of the sky. Nope. I went about my weeks looking high and low for that man that God was now going to put in my life because I was done with the dating thing. Nada.

But it worked for that other girl! She told me so.

Time moved on. I tried a more honest prayer.

Father, I just want you to know that this is it. I’m using this prayer to trick you into thinking that I’m done so that you’ll send the man I’m to marry. It’s the best I can do. Come what may.

What came was a myriad of books and advice on how to find the right Godly man and marry him. I kissed dating good-bye, kissed it hello, and kissed it out the door again. I had passion and purity. I flirted and courted and dreamed and ignored. I made male friends and group dated and solo dated and sat at home. I bought a vanilla candle and burned it every night for a few weeks (bet, you haven’t even heard of that one). Finally, worn out, I got real honest.

God, I’m embarrassed about how much time and energy this takes. I’m not going to lie, I want to get married and I’m not giving it up. But, I don’t want to be 80 and in the nursing home and still dreaming of marriage having spent at least half my life and energy thinking about that dream. So, what’s next?

Well, that’s the topic of this new series I'm going to be exploring over the next few weeks: The Dating Game: The Tricks We Play to Get God to Send Us Our Prize . We’ll spend time exploring how we try to apply every person’s story to our own, how stories that should be descriptive become prescriptive, the tricks we try, the result of the pursuit that we all struggle with, and what we really should be pursuing.

The College Dating Game - College Admissions and Applications ...

As the school year begins, the ancient drums of the college dating game call the high school juniors and seniors to action.

The dating game? Isn’t that some lame 70’s game show?

Well, yes. But it’s not a bad analogy for today’s college applicant, so says a recent study by Harvard University and the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor . According to their study of college admissions selectivity, elite schools are getting more and more selective every year. Students applying now are on average 10% less likely to be admitted than students in 1972.

So what affect does that have on the college admissions game? More and more students are looking for ways to become “more attractive” to competitive colleges. Like the peacock pluming its feathers, high school students are taking more and more AP courses, volunteering more, and finding more internships to attract the eye of the hottie colleges.

Although this works temporarily, over time, it only raises the standard of admissions that higher. Once upon a time, only the most ambitious students would take AP courses, and maybe one or two at the most. Now schools are offering as many as five AP’s a semester, and students are taking them. The result? Anything less than at least two AP’s makes you look like a slacker.

What’s our high school student-next door type supposed to do? Sure, you have good grades, competitive scores, and a rigorous class schedule. But so does everybody else. Are the latest trends of private admissions counsellors, expensive SAT tutors, and even ghost essay writers the plastic surgery of the college admissions market? Perhaps, but not all augmentation is bad. The competitiveness of the college admissions field pushes students to take classes they never would have, volunteer, and in general, think outside the box in order to make themselves more attractive.

Dating Game for teens on a Princess Cruise?

I'm going on a cruise next month on the Island Princess, and I'm super curious about what the Dating Game is. It's one of the things they list that they have for teens to do at the Youth Center. I'm 14, btw. Thanks.

Hey, I just went on the Diamond Princess a few weeks ago. I'm sixteen and witnessed this.

It's...not that exciting. It's a girl is going to go behind a curtain and there are three or four boys and a person asks them questions and the girl just picks the boy who has the best answers in her taste. So yeah. It's just really funny, not meant to be taken seriously.

Go there though. You're going to have a freaking blast. The other activities and the people you meet are incredible.
