The College Dating Game - College Admissions and Applications ...

As the school year begins, the ancient drums of the college dating game call the high school juniors and seniors to action.

The dating game? Isn’t that some lame 70’s game show?

Well, yes. But it’s not a bad analogy for today’s college applicant, so says a recent study by Harvard University and the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor . According to their study of college admissions selectivity, elite schools are getting more and more selective every year. Students applying now are on average 10% less likely to be admitted than students in 1972.

So what affect does that have on the college admissions game? More and more students are looking for ways to become “more attractive” to competitive colleges. Like the peacock pluming its feathers, high school students are taking more and more AP courses, volunteering more, and finding more internships to attract the eye of the hottie colleges.

Although this works temporarily, over time, it only raises the standard of admissions that higher. Once upon a time, only the most ambitious students would take AP courses, and maybe one or two at the most. Now schools are offering as many as five AP’s a semester, and students are taking them. The result? Anything less than at least two AP’s makes you look like a slacker.

What’s our high school student-next door type supposed to do? Sure, you have good grades, competitive scores, and a rigorous class schedule. But so does everybody else. Are the latest trends of private admissions counsellors, expensive SAT tutors, and even ghost essay writers the plastic surgery of the college admissions market? Perhaps, but not all augmentation is bad. The competitiveness of the college admissions field pushes students to take classes they never would have, volunteer, and in general, think outside the box in order to make themselves more attractive.

Dating is considered by many to be trial and error. Upper-class students consider it a place where “the odds are good but the goods are odd,” where men and women succumb to desperation from lack of emotional or physical satisfaction. Yet regardless of your previous dating experience, views of RIT, and ego (or lack thereof), the RIT dating scene isn’t as hopeless as it may seem. The most important factor is to have confidence in yourself and be aware of certain ethical guidelines behind dating. Whatever your intention is, you need to understand the meaning behind social dynamics, post-hookup interactions, and relationships. Comprehending their means and ends is the most invaluable component of successful dating.

At RIT, dating is a realm of relative uncertainty, guided by no underlying principle other than personality and prudent judgment. As freshmen, you’ve landed yourself in the ever-expanding melting pot of dormitory life, which provides the necessary breeding grounds for fast-paced social interactions, late night candy binges, and YouTube marathons. Whatever the situation, from sessions to cross-campus illicit adventures, the right circumstance will eventually make itself favorable to meet someone you’re attracted to.

To be most advantageous, it’s best not to use pickup lines , wipe snot on your date’s jacket, or puke on them after only a moment’s discourse. Start small with polite conversation, expanding slowly into more personal topics such as where they grew up or what their favorite Pokémon character is. As the night progresses, you may find yourself in the opportune position of having an engaging conversation about government conspiracies, astrophysics, or personal enlightenment. Assuming mutual attraction ensues, the remainder of the evening could eclipse all else. By asking your date to spend the night together, you could produce either lasting or extremely short mementos. Remember to start slow, taking note of what your date feels is emotionally comfortable.

College dating tips please anything you got?

freshmen on campus freshmen "dry" hall engineering major never had a gf in high school
if any of that helps (if your a college student please say that but any one answer really)

Girls really like it if you take the first step. I know that puts a lot of pressure on the guys, but it's true. Don't try to be anything that you're not, because that almost never works out in terms of relationships. Just go up to a girl you're interested in and talk with her. Make small talk. Ask for her number if you realize you're interested. Call her later that day and ask her if she's free -- girls don't like to wait for a guy to call a week after they meet you. If anything, I'm sure you can impress them with your smarts, and try to meet someone a similar intellectual level as you, because then if you want to talk about certain things, it won't be so hard to do.

Any tips on how to keep dating a guy through college?

I have been dating my current boyfriend for over a year and a half, and we are both going to colleges this year, different ones. We are only an hour apart, but I am worried that we wont be able to stay near as close as we have been, and that we will just drift apart. Does anyone have any tips for how to keep this from happening?

The most important thing is trust. Not just you trusting him, but you trusting yourself to not do anything you'll regret.

I know what it's like to go through with something like this. I understand the sacrifice you'll have to make.

Another thing is communication. It's hard to love someone you barely see or talk to. But just think of it this way, the more time away from that person, the more you cherish every waking moment when you see them again.

I believe that if you love is real, it will find a way to work out in the end.
